QUESTION

I drew some stairs and used the Auto Stairwell button to create a stairwell to the next floor. Now, though, I need to move the stairs and I can't seem to find a way to move the stairwell. How can I do this?

ANSWER

The Auto Stairwell edit button automatically creates a room above the selected stairs with the Open Below attribute. This stairwell is produced by railings, which enclose the area above the stairs. If you move a set of stairs after a stairwell has been created, you can go up one floor and then move each of the railings forming the stairwell so that they are positioned correctly. In many situations, though, it is easiest to simply delete the railings and then recreate the stairwell.

To move a stairwell

  1. Open the plan in which you would like to move a stairwell and go to the floor that the staircase is drawn on.

  2. Go Up One Floor and locate the railings forming the stairwell.

  3. Select Tools> Reference Floors> Reference Floor Display from the menu to turn on the display of the floor below so that you can locate the staircase below.

  4. Select one of the stairwell railings and move it to the correct location relative to the stairs using the edit handle that displays where you clicked.

  5. Repeat step 4 for each railing until the stairwell with its Open Below specification is properly positioned.

To delete a stairwell

  1. First, go up one floor from the staircase and delete all the railings forming the stairwell.

  2. You can now move down one floor, position your staircase as needed, and create a new stairwell by clicking the Auto Stairwell edit button.
