I would like to change the height of one single wall in my plan to create a half wall, or partial wall. When I use the Room Specification dialog and adjust the value for Ceiling Height, all of my walls change in height.

How do I adjust the height of just one wall when using Home Designer?

There are a number of ways to create the effect of a half, or partial height wall in your plan.  In this article, we will discuss the most common method of using a Half Wall, or Solid Railing, to accomplish this task.

To adjust the height of just one wall

  1. Select Build> Wall> Straight Half Wall , then click and drag to draw a half wall.

Note: The Half Wall tool is not available in the Home Designer Essentials, nor any Home Designer programs prior to version 10.

In these versions, instead select Build> Wall> Straight Railing and specify the resulting railings as being a solid railing.

  2. Once placed, use the Select Objects tool  to select the railing and choose the Open Object edit tool to display the Railing Specification dialog.

  3. In the Newels/Balusters panel, set the Railing Height to adjust the height of your half wall.

For the purposes of our example, we will set this value to 36"

In Home Designer 2012 and prior versions, the Railing Height is set on the Railing tab.

Note: In versions of the software using the Railing tool, move the radio button under Railing Type to Solid and set the Railing Height on the Rail Style tab

  4. Go the Materials panel and set the materials for the components that make up the railing.

  5. Click OK to apply these changes, then generate a 3D Camera view to see the results.
