QUESTION

I would like to apply decorative paneled wall coverings, also known as wainscoting, to the lower portion of some of the walls in my Home Designer plan.  How can I accomplish this?

ANSWER

There are two different ways to apply wainscoting in your design:

  • Placing wainscoting panels from the library along the walls

  • Specifying a Wall Covering for individual walls or a room

To place wainscoting panel symbols from the Library Browser

  1. First, launch your software program, and then choose to Open  the plan in which you want to create the wainscoting, or start a New Plan .

  2. Next, select View> Library Browser

    • Navigate to Library> Library Browser in Home Designer 2014 and prior versions.

  3. Navigate to Home Designer Core Catalogs> Architectural> Millwork> Wainscoting or in to the Manufacturer> New England Classic> Wainscot manufacturer library.

The New England Classic® manufacturer catalog can be downloaded from the 3D Library at http://3dlibrary.chiefarchitect.com/index.php?r=site/detail/712.

  4. Select the type of panel you want to use in the Library Browser, and  then click to place it in the plan to place it against the wall.

  5. Once placed, you can use the Select Objects  tool to select the wainscot panel, which is a cabinet object, and  make further modifications, such as moving it, or adjusting its size and  materials as necessary in its Specification dialog.

You can also adjust these objects while in the camera view.

You may find it helpful to create a 3D Camera view of the area you are placing the wainscoting, and then select Window> Tile Vertically so that you can see how the changes you are making in the 2D floor plan affect the 3D Display.

  6. Once you have one wainscot panel set up to the appropriate size and material that you want, you can then use the Copy  and Paste  edit tools to create copies of the modified object and move them in to place.

Select Home Designer products can also use the Wall Covering feature to apply the appearance of  wainscoting between the chair rail and base moldings.

To specify a wall covering

Wall Coverings are only available in Home Designer Interiors, Home Designer Architectural, and Home Designer Pro.

  1. Using the Select Objects  tool, click on the inside of the room and select the Open Object  edit button to display the Room Specification dialog.

  2. On the Wall Covering panel, click the Add New button to open the Select Library Object dialog.

  3. Browse the Materials library category and select a material to use as wainscoting, then click OK to close the Select Library Object dialog and return to the Room Specification dialog.

    • For the purposes of this example, we browsed to Home Designer Core Catalogs> Materials> Siding> Beadboard> Brown> Beige Beadboard.

  4. Specify the Top To Ceiling, Height and Floor to Bottom heights of the horizontal section that you would like to apply wainscoting to.

    • Begin with the Height value, then press the Tab key on your keyboard to update the dialog without closing it.

    • Next, specify either the Top to Ceiling or Floor to Bottom value, depending on which is the easiest for you to figure, and then press the Tab key.

    • When you are satisfied with your wall covering selections, click OK to close the dialog and apply your changes.

Specify the Floor to Bottom value if you are placing a wainscoting near the floor.

If you are not happy with your selection, the wall covering can be deleted by selecting it from the Wall Covering drop-down list, and then clicking the Delete button. To replace a wall covering, select it from the drop-down list and choose the Replace button.

  5. Select 3D> Create Camera View> Full Camera  and click and drag in the room to view the new wall coverings.

To apply horizontal sections of wainscoting to a single wall

The method for applying horizontal sections of wainscoting to an individual wall is very similar to that for applying them to a room. Instead of using the Wall Coverings panel of the Room Specification dialog, select the individual wall and use the Wall Coverings panel of the Wall Specification dialog instead.

Since Home Designer Essentials, Home Designer Landscape & Deck, and Home Designer Suite do not have the Wall Covering feature, you can approximate a similar wainscoting effect by placing a thin, re-sized Closed Box from the Library Browser against the wall, and applying a material to it.
