I would like to create a tiled bathroom area. How can I modify tile materials and apply them only to certain sections of the walls?

Modifying materials size, color and orientation, and applying them to only certain sections of walls is easy to accomplish in Home Designer using the Define Material, Room Specification, and Wall Covering tools.

First, you will want to set up the tile material(s) that you want to apply to the walls.

To make a copy of the tile

  1. Select View> Library Browser  and locate the tile material that you want to modify.

  2. Right-click on the text that is specified as the Material's name and choose Copy.

Library Browser with right-click menu showing Copy option

For the purposes of this example, in the Library Browser, navigate to Manufacturer Catalogs> DalTile®> Ceramic> Heathland> Raffia HL02.

If you have not already downloaded the DalTile® manufacturer catalog, you can do so from the 3D Library on the website.

  3. Next, still in the Library Browser, move to the User Catalog folder, right click, and select Paste.

Library Browser with right-click menu showing Paste option

Now that you have made a copy of the tile material in the User Catalog, you can change its attributes.

To modify the tile material

  1. Right-click on the material in your User Catalog folder and select Open Object to display the Define Material dialog.

Library Browser with right-click menu showing Open Object option

  2. On the General panel of the Define Material dialog:

Define Material dialog showing new name, X Scale, Y Scale and Rotate Angle

Note: The display of the above dialog may vary slightly between the different versions of Home Designer.

  • Enter a Name for this material to help remember that the scale of the tile is 10 inches by 10 inches, and that you have rotated the material 45 degrees from the original tile material that it was copied from.

  • Set the Scale, in this example set both X and Y to 10" as this is a square tile.

  • Change the Rotate Angle if necessary. In this example we set it to 45 degrees so that it displays with a diamond orientation.

  • In Home Designer Pro and Architectural, change the Width and Height to 10" and select the Texture panel to adjust the Scale. Change the Angle to 45 degrees on the Texture panel for the display of materials in Perspective Camera views. Adjust the Angle on the Pattern panel as well to adjust it for Orthographic views, such as Cross Section/Elevations.

  • Click OK to apply these changes to the material.

  • Finally, repeat this process to create any other additional modified versions of the material that you may want to use in your design. Start by adjusting the Materials for several surfaces applied to an entire room.

To apply the tile to a surface

    1. In plan view, use the Select Objects  tool to click inside of the room.

If there is not an actual wall where you want to change the flooring or walls, such as in a shower area, use a Room Divider wall to separate out the area in which you want to be able to apply the rotated material.

    2. Click on the Open Object  edit tool to display the Room Specification dialog.

    3. Go to the Materials panel, select Walls and click on the Select Material button to display the Select Material dialog.

    4. Navigate to the User Catalog folder and select your material, then click OK.

    5. Repeat this process for any other room materials you may wish to adjust, such as the moldings.

    6. Wall Coverings* allow for multiple materials to be applied to a wall segment or a whole room using the Wall Covering panel.
