QUESTION

When I add two switches to my drawing, and then connect them to a single light, my switches convert automatically to three-way switches. How do I stop this automatic conversion process, so that I only have the two-way switches I started out with?

ANSWER

First, launch Home Designer Pro and open an existing plan, or create a new plan from scratch.

If you are working with an existing plan in which your switches have already been converted to three way switches, complete the following procedure.

To delete the electrical connection

  1. Using the Select Objects  tool, click on one of the electrical connections between the switches and the light.

  2. Once the electrical connection has been selected, press the Delete  edit tool, or Delete key on your keyboard.

  3. Repeat this same procedure with all other electrical connections in which the switches have converted to three way switches.

Once you have removed the extra electrical connection, you are ready to adjust the automatic switch type.

To control the automatic switch type

  1. Using the Select Objects  tool, select one of the switches, and click on the Open Object  edit button to display the Electrical Service Specification dialog.

  2. On the General panel, remove the checkmark next to Automatically Change Switch Type When Wiring.

  3. Next, repeat this same procedure with any other switches that have automatically been converted to three way switches.

  4. Lastly, reconnect the switches to the lights by selecting Build> Electrical> Connect Electrical  and draw a line from the switch to the light.

  5. Repeat this procedure as necessary to connect the switches to the lights or other electrical objects in your plan.
