I need to model a structure that has multiple shed roofs. How can I accomplish this in Home Designer?

Creating a structure with multiple shed roofs is easy to accomplish in Home Designer. In this article, we walk you through creating the shed roof combination in the image above. Once you have completed these steps, you can then use the skills that you have learned and apply them to your own design.

To create the basic plan

  1. Launch your Home Designer program, and choose to start a New Plan   using the default style template.

  2. Draw a basic outline of the structure, as in the image below.

  3. Using the Select Objects  tool, select the bottom left wall and click on the Open Object   edit button.

  4. On the Roof panel of the Wall Specification dialog that displays, specify the wall as Full Gable Wall, and click OK

Wall Specification – Roof panel – Full Gable Wall option selected

  5. Repeat this process for all of the walls as indicated in green the image below.

Note that you will need to use the Build> Wall> Break Wall   tool to place breaks along the back wall where it meets the two vertical walls, so that you only define the two end segments as Full Gable Wall.

  6. Once you have defined these walls as Full Gable Wall, set the two inner walls to High Shed/Gable Wall

Wall Specification – Roof panel – High Shed/Gable Wall option selected

The two inner walls set as High Shed/Gable Wall are displayed in blue in the image below.

  7. The remaining walls left at the default color in the image above are the walls which allow you to adjust their Pitch on the Wall Specification dialog, to control the individual roof planes that will cover each section of the house.

  8. Select the top middle section that is currently undefined, and adjust its Pitch to be 4" in 12" and click OK

Wall Specification – Roof panel – 4” in 12 entered for the Pitch

  9. Finally, use the Select Objects  tool to select the room on the right of the structure and increase its Rough Ceiling value to be 144", then click OK.

Repeat this procedure on the left room as well, leaving only the center room at the default value.

  10. Select Build> Roof> Build Roof   to rebuild the roof, if you do not have the Auto Rebuild Roofs option checked.

  11. Finally, take a 3D Perspective Full Overview   to see the results.
