QUESTION

Most of my roof has an 8:12 pitch, but the shed roof over the porch has a pitch that is only 3:12. How can I change this?

ANSWER

You can quickly build an automatic roof based on the settings in the Build Roof dialog. If you need different settings for a particular roof plane in your plan, you can specify these special settings on the Roof panel of the Wall Specification dialog of the wall that this roof plane will bear on when built.

To change the pitch of a single wall

  1. With the plan open, select a wall you'd like to modify the pitch of and click on the Open Object  edit button.

  2. On the Roof panel of the Wall, Railing or Deck Railing Specification dialog, specify the desired pitch.

Deck Railing Specification dialog with 6” in 12” Pitch specified on the Roof panel

In this example, 6" in 12" was used.

  3. Click OK to close the dialog.

  4. Select Build> Roof> Build Roof from the menu.

  5. Check the Auto Rebuild Roofs and hit OK to rebuild the roof with this new change.

*The Home Designer Essentials product doesn't have the Auto Rebuild Roofs feature. Anytime a change is made that relates to the roof, you will need to open the Build Roof dialog and hit OK to apply any changes that have been made.

To specify multiple pitch values for a wall

  1. Select Open Plan to open the plan file in which you would like to specify multiple pitch values for a particular roof plane.

Floor plan view of 30’ by 20’ house and 30’ by 6’ 3” Deck

    • In this example, a simple rectangular structure is used.

    • A 75" deep deck runs the full length of one side, which is specified to have a Roof Over This Room.

    • The shorter side walls of the main structure and side railings of the porch room are all set as Full Gable Wall on the Roof panel of the Wall Specification dialog.

  2. Click on the wall or railing that the roof section you wish to change will bear on to select it, then click the Open Object edit button.

  3. On the Roof panel of the Wall, Railing or Deck Railing Specification dialog, specify the desired Pitch.

Deck Railing Specification dialog with 3” in 12 specified for the Pitch, Upper Pitch selected and 8” in 12 specified for the Upper Pitch with 75” entered for the In From Baseline value

  4. Check the box next to Upper Pitch and set this value.

In this example, this is 8" in 12".

  5. Specify where to Start the upper pitch - by either specifying at what roof Height to transition from lower to upper pitch, or the measurement In from Baseline where the transition should occur.

In this example, the porch room is 6' 3" (75") deep, so this value is specified In From Baseline.

  6. Select Build> Roof> Build Roof from the menu.

  7. In the Build Roof dialog, specify the desired default pitch for your roof, then click OK.

In this example, a default Pitch of 8" in 12" is used - the same pitch as the Upper pitch specified in the Deck Railing Specification dialog.
